We the undersigned support Councillor Shayne Sutton’s call for funding to upgrade critical intersections along the Lytton Road corridor to improve its safety and efficiency for all road users. We note that currently more than 16,000 vehicles a day are already using the Lytton Road corridor including a high proportion of heavy industrial vehicles. We understand recent traffic studies show the intersections listed below are already operating over capacity, or close to capacity, and that the redevelopment of the Bulimba Barracks will further exacerbate the problems at each of these intersections:

Lytton Road/Junction Road/Colmslie Road roundabout

Lytton Road/Col Gardner Drive (Colmslie Recreation Reserve) intersection

Lytton Road/Thynne Road

Lytton Road/Beverley Street intersection

Lytton Road/Breene Place intersection

Lytton Road/Riverside Place

Lytton Road/Oxford Street

We are aware that significant safety concerns have also been raised regarding the intersection of Thynne Road and Lytton Road, particularly for Balmoral State High School students, and Taylor Street and Lytton Road due to Council’s approval of a massive warehousing facility at 153 Taylor Street. Finally, we also recognise the importance of providing a safe separated cycleway along the Lytton Road corridor for cyclists, which should include the widening the Perrin Creek Bridge, which is currently a dangerous pinch point for both cyclists and pedestrians.

We understand that under the City Of Brisbane Act, the Lord Mayor is responsible for setting the budget and as such, we call on Lord Mayor Graham Quirk and the Brisbane City Council to urgently prioritise funding to start addressing the very real problems along the Lytton Road Corridor in the next Council budget.

Council response

Thank you for your petition requesting Council upgrade Lytton Road between Oxford Street and Junction Road to reduce congestion and improve safety.

Council has allocated funding to install traffic signals at the Lytton Road, Apollo Road and Thorpe Street intersection and alter the Lytton Road and Baldwin Street intersection to a left‑in/left-out configuration, to be completed within the 2016-17 financial year.

Council will install ‘Share the Road’ signage on the approaches to Perrin Creek Bridge, to raise awareness for cyclists and motorists crossing Perrin Creek Bridge.

Bike facilities will be upgraded on Lytton Road between Junction Road and Oxford Street, the Lytton Road and Junction Road intersection will be upgraded and the intersection of Col Gardner Drive and Lytton Road will be upgraded when funding becomes available prioritised against other city wide projects.
