Brisbane City Council has invited citizen input on the future of both the Mt Coot-tha and the Pine Mountain Quarries. Through a Visioning Project, citizens are asked to submit ideas that will enable the City to ‘reimagine the…quarries as future world-class destinations’. Since the Project’s announcement, social media has actively speculated about what sort of ‘world-class’ facilities the quarries could eventually house.
The B.C.C. portal for submitting ideas provides nothing to guide anyone wanting to make an informed submission: no maps, no images, no dimensions, nor any information about what is there. When contacted, B.C.C. confirmed that no detailed information is provided because there is, at present, none to be had.
The Pine Mountain Quarry is an asset we all own. The locals know the space and will be those most impacted by any future plans. Through several community meetings residents have indicated they have very different expectations of what the quarry should become. Consequently, as the Visioning Project moves forward, we, the undersigned, have the following expectations of Brisbane City Council:
1. Regardless of what the Pine Mountain Quarry eventually becomes, an industry standard quarry rehabilitation plan will be created and followed;
2. The final plan for the Quarry will ecologically integrate the property into the existing local greenspace and enhance the existing fauna corridors;
3. A safe and sustainable transportation plan for access to the site shall be created for both humans and fauna, including movement along the length of Pine Mountain Road;
4. Brisbane City Council will publish a precis of all the submissions they receive; and
5. Brisbane City Council will commit to a full and open public consultation process, including local public meetings, to include all affected stakeholders, residents, and the public.
