Residents draw to the attention of Council a proposal to build a skate park in Primrose Park, Wynnum. This would severely reduce the green space of the small park.

Your petitioners therefore request a more suitable location is found to facilitate a bigger skate park and to keep green space in Primrose Park for current park users. There are already a lot of facilities in Primrose Park including a half basketball court, play equipment, barbecue area, toilets, handball/wall and cricket strip.

Council response

Thank you for your petition opposing the request for Council to construct a skateboarding facility in Primrose Park, Wynnum West.

Council has completed an investigation and considered your request. It was decided that the petitioners be advised of the following information.

Primrose Park contains a cricket pitch, playground, basketball half court, rebound wall, two picnic shelters, a barbeque, seating, pathways and a toilet block. The park has extensive road frontage on suburban and district roads, which should provide effective passive surveillance to deter antisocial behaviour, as well a source of ambient (traffic) noise that will help to mitigate noise generated by users of the proposed skate facility. There are also expansive open grassed areas within the park, and it is envisaged that the skate facility will only take up a small portion of this open space.

The closest existing Council skate facilities to Primrose Park are in Ed Devenport Rotary Park, Lota, which is more than four kilometres away, and in Murarrie Recreation Ground, which is more than six kilometres away. Given there are 35 skate facilities in Council parks spread across Brisbane, this is one of the larger ‘gap’ areas for the provision of skate facilities citywide. While your opposition to this proposal is acknowledged, Council has also received significant public support for the proposal to construct a new skate facility in this location.

For the above reasons, Council supports the proposal to construct a new skate facility in Primrose Park, Wynnum West, funded through the Wynnum Manly Ward Footpath and Parks Trust Fund.

Thank you for raising this matter.
