The Elenora Dog Park is one of the best dog parks in Brisbane - if you have a large dog. The park area for large dogs is enormous and has trees for shade and also two covered seating areas for protection against rain and heat. However, the small dog area is tiny in comparison, has no shade what-so-ever and no agility equipment. Often it is the topic of conversation that small dog owners feel compelled to bring their dogs into the large dog area so that they can use the space, use the equipment and play with other dogs as the small dog park is often empty due to the unappealing nature of it both for the dogs and the owners. It seems unnecessary and unfair to have all the facilities on one side and not on both. I also know many small dog owners who do not use the park simply because of the extreme lack of facilities - shade etc in that park and who are too scared to take their dog into the big dog park.
Your petitioners therefore request that the fence that separates the two parks is moved so that it travels through the middle of the trees. It would be nice to have a covered seating area also, however, even to share the trees would provide shade and more space for small dogs and their owners to enjoy. Many of the big dog owners agree.
Thank you for your petition requesting that Council expand the Elanora Park small dog off leash area on Granada Street, Wynnum.
Council has completed an onsite investigation and considered your request.
Council will list for consideration the upgrade of the small dog off-leash area at Elanora Park, Wynnum, in the 2019-20 Capital Works Program. Each June, all listed projects are prioritised and assessed against the overall needs of the city. The works that are approved have the highest priority in terms of public safety, convenience and the number of people directly benefit in relation to the cost.
Your request has also been forwarded to Councillor Peter Cumming, Councillor for Wynnum Manly Ward, for consideration as part of the Ward Footpath and Parks Trust Fund program. If you wish to discuss your request directly with Councillor Cumming, please contact his ward office on (07) 3403 2180.
Thank you for raising this matter.
