Residents draw to the attention of Brisbane City Council the need to protect rock climbers from debris, rocks, rubbish and other objects thrown at them either intentionally or unintentionally. This is very dangerous and I would like to urge our Council to please fix this serious and ongoing problem for the safety of Brisbane residents who practice the sport of rock climbing in the Kangaroo Point cliffs, as well as visiting climbers from other countries, who regularly climb the cliffs.
Your petitioners therefore request that a safety mechanism (fence, safety net, etc.) that prevents vandalism against climbers must be installed on top of the cliffs.
Thank you for your petition requesting Council install a safety mechanism that prevents vandalism against climbers at the top of Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Kangaroo Point.
Council has completed investigations and considered your request. It was decided that the petitioners be advised of the following information.
Council values the safety and wellbeing of all residents and visitors. As the Kangaroo Point Cliffs are identified on the Queensland Heritage Register as having State heritage significance, any proposed works on or around the cliffs need to be sensitively designed and located so they do not compromise their heritage values.
Kangaroo Point Cliffs provide views and amenity to park users and visitors, and any proposed fencing would need to complement the current aesthetics and not detract from views or the general experience from the clifftop. The design would need to provide easy access to the cliff for climbers as the cliffs are publicly accessible and not restrict clifftop maintenance activities.
Council’s Natural Environment, Water and Sustainability, City Planning and Sustainability, has noted your suggestion and will consider it in future park upgrade works.
