Residents draw to the attention of Brisbane City Council the inadequate markings on the bikeway, between the V1 Veloway and Hamilton St, Kangaroo Point. This is a very busy cycle route for commuters and recreational cyclists between the V1 Veloway and the Story Bridge. It is subject to heavy cycle traffic especially in the early mornings and early evening. Many pedestrians appear to be unaware of the designated cycleway and walk across or along it without giving way to cyclists. This presents a danger to both the cyclists and pedestrians, as well as inconvenience and conflict. The existing markings have worn away and are barely visible, especially in times of low light. There is also a lack of sensible lane separation at various points along the shared sections, with requirement for pedestrians and cyclists to swap sides of the path creating a hazard. The introduction of electric scooters has also increased the volume of traffic along this route, with riders who are not familiar with the path coming into conflict with both cyclists and pedestrians. Often these scooters are parked on the bikeway.
Petitioners therefore request Brisbane City Council paint the Kangaroo Point bikeway, between the V1 Veloway and Hamilton Street, with current standard bikeway markings (e.g. green lanes and clear graphics) to vastly improve safety and flow along this busy section.
