Residents again draw to the attention of the Lord Mayor and Council the urgent need to prioritise safety on Riding Road (between Wynnum and Lytton Roads) and also the intersection located on the corner of Pashen Street and Riding Road. Riding Road has three existing 40km/hour school zones and has recently been reduced to 50km/hour for the entirety of the road. Riding Road and the intersection on the corner of Pashen Street have been a safety concern to local residents since at least 2005. There have been at least six serious pedestrian crashes on Riding Road (including one fatality, three hospitalisations and three requiring medical treatment) in recent years. The most recent incident being on Thursday 22 August 2019 involved two primary school aged children who were hit on the pedestrian crossing at this intersection.
Your petitioners therefore request Council to urgently take the following measures:-
1. Immediately reduce the speed limit on Riding Road to 40km/hour (between Wynnum and Lytton Roads);
2. Immediately install “Zebra Warning Ahead” signs leading up to the pedestrian crossing on the corner of Riding Road and Pashen Street under the LED Road Sign Program; and
3. Urgently design and install traffic signals and upgrade the intersection at the corner of Riding Road and Pashen Street in the 19/20 Financial Year.
